The "Messy Middle" Matters: How to Keep Growing While You’re Still Under Construction

We’ve all seen those home renovation shows. You know the ones: where a family buys a "fixer-upper" and by the forty-minute mark, they’re sipping wine in a literal palace. But there’s a part of the show that always makes my heart race a little bit: the "demo day" and the weeks following it. The walls are ripped out, the plumbing is exposed, dust is covering every single surface, and for a moment, the house looks significantly worse than when they started.
In the world of personal development and healing, we call this the "Messy Middle."
It’s that uncomfortable, gritty, often exhausting phase where you’ve left behind the person you used to be, but you haven’t quite arrived at the person you’re becoming. You’re under construction. And if you’re feeling like a bit of a disaster right now, I want you to hear this: The mess isn't a sign that you’re failing; it’s proof that you’re evolving.
Why the Middle Feels So Heavy
When we decide to "Champion Our Scars," we often start with a burst of inspiration. We’re ready to change! We’re ready to heal! We buy the journals, we sign up for the coaching, and we’re fired up. But then, the initial excitement fades, and the actual labor begins.
The Messy Middle is heavy because it requires us to sit with the discomfort of the unknown. We are unlearning decades of survival mechanisms. We are shedding old patterns that no longer fit our power, and that process can feel like losing a limb. Even if a habit was toxic, it was familiar. It kept us "safe" in a twisted way. Stepping away from it leaves us feeling exposed.

The Myth of the "Quick Fix"
In our fast-paced world, we’re conditioned to want the "after" photo immediately. We want the peace without the processing. But healing isn't a microwave dinner; it’s a slow-cooked masterpiece.
If you try to rush the construction of a building, the foundation will be weak. The same applies to your growth. If you try to skip the Messy Middle: the part where you’re crying on your yoga mat, or finally setting a boundary that makes you feel sick to your stomach: you’re skipping the very work that builds your resilience.
Your scars don't define you, they refine you. And refinement happens in the heat of the middle.
Signs You’re in the Messy Middle
How do you know if you’re in this phase? Look for these markers:
Identity Confusion: You don’t relate to your old self anymore, but the "new you" feels like a pair of shoes you haven't broken in yet.
Success Triggers: Paradoxically, as you start to grow, you feel a spike in anxiety or "imposter syndrome." Your brain is screaming, "It’s not safe to be this happy/successful!"
Emotional Volatility: One day you feel like a warrior; the next, you’re overwhelmed by a grocery list.
Relational Shifting: Some people in your life might not like the "under construction" version of you because you’re no longer playing the role they assigned to you.

Cultivating Nervous System Wealth
At Champion Your Scars, we talk a lot about "Nervous System Wealth." Usually, when people think of wealth, they think of bank accounts. But true success is internal peace and safety.
When you’re in the Messy Middle, your nervous system is often on high alert. You’re doing new things, and "new" equals "danger" to an unregulated brain. To keep growing while you’re under construction, you have to prioritize somatic regulation. You have to teach your body that it is safe to be in transition.
This means:
Breathwork: Grounding yourself when the "mess" feels too loud.
Self-Compassion: Speaking to yourself like you would to a dear friend who is going through a hard time.
Safety Plans for Growth: Recognizing when a "success trigger" is happening and having a plan to navigate the burnout or fear that follows.
The Kintsugi Mindset: Scars as Gold
There is a Japanese art form called Kintsugi, where broken pottery is repaired with gold lacquer. The philosophy is that the piece is more beautiful for having been broken.
Right now, you might feel like that broken pot. You might feel like the cracks are too wide to fix. But in the Messy Middle, those cracks are exactly where the gold goes. Every time you choose to show up for yourself despite the fear, you’re pouring gold into a seam. Every time you honor your trauma without letting it drive the bus, you’re becoming a masterpiece.

How to Keep Moving When You Want to Quit
The urge to quit is strongest in the middle. It’s when the finish line feels miles away and the starting line is a distant memory. Here’s how you keep going:
1. Focus on the Next Right Step Don’t look at the whole mountain. Look at your feet. What is one small thing you can do today to honor your growth? Maybe it’s drinking more water, or maybe it’s finally ordering that book you’ve been eyeing.
2. Lean into Community You weren't meant to heal in a vacuum. Isolation is where trauma thrives. When you surround yourself with people who are also "under construction," the mess feels less like a personal failure and more like a shared journey. That’s why we created The Empowered Healing Circle (Skool): a place where the messy middle is celebrated, not judged.
3. Remember the "Why" Why did you start this journey? Was it to break a generational legacy? Was it to finally feel comfortable in your own skin? Keep that "why" in front of you like a North Star.
